Blindfolded Pencil Assembling Game: Sensory Perception and Coordination Activity

17/20
Blindfolded Pencil Assembling Game is a fun and educational in-class activity based on children temporarily disabling their sense of sight and trying to combine an object in their hands (pen and cap) using only the sense of touch and spatial perception (proprioception). While this activity challenges and develops hand-eye coordination, it also reinforces the sense of trust between the student and the student who guides his friend who is blindfolded.
  • Suitable Age Group: 5+ Years (Suitable for preschool and primary school level)
  • Required Materials: A pencil, felt-tip pen or ballpoint pen (Any object with a cover)
  • Basic Achievements: Sensory perception (Touch), fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial perception and sense of confidence
  • Play Area: Classroom, playroom or home

What is the Blindfolded Pencil Assembling Game?

This activity; It is a coordination game in which two students work collaboratively, one of whom tries to complete a task without using the sense of sight, relying on the other's guidance or on his own sensory map. As seen in the image, while one student closes his eyes, the other student waits for him to put the pen on the cap without guiding his hands (or just giving verbal clues).

Gains of the Activity for Children

  • Sensory Perception Development (Touch): Increases the ability to sense the shape, size and position of objects without the sense of sight.
  • Hand-Eye Coordination and Fine Motor Skills: Develops the precise hand movements required to align and attach the pen to its cap.
  • Spatial. Perception (Proprioception): Strengthens the ability to sense where body parts (hands) are relative to each other.
  • Trust and Cooperation: The blindfolded student learns to trust his friend behind him; The student guide takes responsibility.

Materials Required for the Activity

  • One Pen: Any blackboard pencil or felt-tip pen with a removable cap.

How to Implement the Activity? (Step by Step)

  • Pairing: Students pair up in pairs.
  • Position: One student goes to the front, the other student stands behind him.
  • Closing the Eyes: The student in the back gently covers the eyes of his friend in front with his hands.
  • Giving the Task: A pencil and its cap are given separately to the student with his eyes closed.
  • Application: The student with his eyes closed, just with his hands.
  • Time and Control: When the task is completed or the specified time is up (e.g. 10 seconds), students change roles.

Tips for Teachers and Parents

  • Guidance: Ask the student behind only "right", "left", "up", "down" without touching his friend's hands. It can be said to provide guidance by giving verbal clues. This also improves verbal communication skills.
  • Difficulty Level: For older children, smaller or more complex objects (Lego pieces, bottle caps, etc.) can be used instead of pencils.
  • Trust Emphasis: After the activity, children can be asked "How did you feel when your eyes were closed?", "Did you trust your friend?" Trust and cooperation can be discussed with questions such as.
